لقد برهنت ظواهر مدهشة، كالفشل الأميركي في فيتنام، على ضرورة أيجاد فهم جديد، ووعي جديد للحرب، وتقييم جديد لعناصرها الأساسية، وتشكل هذه المراجعة الهدف الجوهري لهذا الكتاب. من هذا المنطلق يطرح الباحث فكرة أو رأياً حول دوافع الحروب أو العوامل المساعدة على خوضها مؤكداً على عاملين جديدين هما: التطور التقني الذي زاد فجأة وبشكل لا يصدق السرعات، ومدى الرماية، والعمل، والقدرات الانفجارية، وعدل بالتالي ظاهرة الحرب، والتطور النفسي (السيكولوجي) الذي أدخل إلى الصراع على ما يبدو أبعاداً جديدة وخاصة بعد أن طوّر بشكل مدهش المركبة الثوري للحرب. إلا أن الباحث وعند دراسته مجمل الأحداث المعاصرة كشفت له حقائق خمسين صراعاً محدثاً، وبرهنت أن كل هذه الصراعات تضم عنصراً ثورياً بحتاً مما قاده إلى تحديد الأسباب التي جعلت الوسائل الدستورية تحقق اليوم مثل هذا الشيوع وبالتالي تحديد المبادئ التي تقود الحرب الثورية. وقد شكلت هذه الدراسة النظرية تماماً الجزء الأول من هذا الكتاب. إنها تحلل الآليات المنطقية للحرب الحديثة وتصفها، مما سمح للباحث باستخدام مصطلحات دقيقة عند وضع دراسة نقدية للحروب الرئيسية، تلك شكلت الجزء الثاني من الكتاب، وهو جزء وضع بناءً على وثائق واسعة. وأما ما انتهى إليه الباحث في نهاية المطاف من استنتاجات فقد ضمتها خاتمة الكتاب.
