مع الزمن انقطع اتصالي بباتريشيا وجاء الشتاء. كان علي أن أعود إلى الدراسة وأقابل- رغمًا عني- زملائي الذين ينتمون إلى المقهى الباريزي. في النادي الرياضي حديقة صغيرة كنت أرتادها أحيانًا في النهار. لم أكن أصطحب أحدًا إلى النادي. كنت أذهب وحيدًا لأشاهد اللاعبين وأدخن السجائر ثم أجلس في الحديقة أداعب القطط وأنظر إلى الأزهار. حديقة جميلة فيها البني والأخضر وألوان الأزهار المتباينة. زهرة عباد الشمس كانت تبرز دائمًا بين الأزهار الأخرى- تبزغ كأنها شمس صغيرة- وكنت كلما أنظر إليها أتذكر طيفًا قديمًا لحقل متسع بلا حدود ومجرى ماء، فان جوخ على مقربة يرسم الزهرة الكبيرة، وهي في مواجهة الشمس أفقيًا يخرج منها النور. أعتقد أنني كنت أرى أيضًا فتاة: شقراء فاتنة أو سوداء من الجنوب، تبتسم أو تهمس أو تشاهد هي الأخرى فان جوخ. لا أذكر على وجه الدقة. المهم أن هذه الزهرة كانت تذكرني دائمًا بذلك الطيف.
