لماذا وقع ما وقع؟ وهل يمكن ألاّ يقع من جديد؟ تضيء الرواية بشكلٍ باهرٍ مرحلةً قائمة من تاريخ إسبانيا، فضّل المجتمع الإسباني لمدّة طويلة ألاّ يتأمّلها، هي مرحلة الحرب الأهليّة، لذا ساد ما يشبه البياض، وظلّت الذاكرة الجمعيّة متشنّجة، بعد طيّ الصفحة دون قراءتها بشكل كامل.
وعلى الرغم من الأجواء القاتمة التي تهيمن على الرواية، فهناك إحتفاء بالإبداع والمبدعين، هناك شاعر ينشد أشعاره بين الرصاص، ومترجم لا يغادر منزله، وجنديّ يقضي وقته في رسم أعلام ملوّنة... مبدعون يضيئون ليل الهزيمة وإبداعات تؤكّد أنّ جوهر الإنسان عَصِيّ على الإستسلام.
