في القرن التاسع عشر في الصين وفي إحدى مقاطعات إقليم "هنان" ترتبط فتاة اسمها "زهرة الزنبق" في سن السابعة الغض مع رفيقة لها من نفس العمر بارتباط عاطفي يدوم مدى الحياة. وتقدم الرفيقة، واسمها "زهرة الثلج"، نفسها إلى "زهرة الزنبق" بإرسالها مروحة حريرية كتبت عليها قصيدة بلغة الـ"نوشو"، وهي لغة فريدة من نوعها ابتكرتها النساء الصينيات ليتواصلن مع بعضهن البعض سراً بعيداً عن هيمنة الرجال. ومع مرور السنوات، ترسل ؟زهرة الزنبق" و"زهرة الثلج" لبعضها رسائل على المروحة وتولفان قصصاً على المناديل خارجتين من عزلتهما لتتشاركا آمالهما وأحلامهما وإنجازاتهما. وتتحملان معاً معاناة ربط القدمين وتتأملان معاً في زواجيهما المرتبين وتتشاركان الوحدة وأفراح الأمومة ومآسيها. فتجدان العزاء وهما تنميان صلة تحيي روحيهما. ولكن عندما ينشأ سوء تفاهم بينهما يهدد فجأة بهدم صداقتهما العميقة.
