هذا الكتاب عبارة عن بحث مسهب في الأحوال السياسية للمنطقة الشمالية من العراق طوال الفترة الممتدة ما بين سنة 1958، وهي تاريخ القضاء على النظام الملكي الهاشمي، وسنة 1975، وهي تاريخ توقيع اتفاقية الجزائر بين العراق وإيران التي أدت إلى انهيار القوى المسلحة الكردية آنذاك. يدرس الكتاب تلك المنطقة بالتفصيل، جغرافياً وطبيعياً، ثم ينثني إلى دراسة السكان فيها قبل أن يتوغل في رصد التطورات التاريخية التي سبقت قيام الحكم الجمهوري في سنة 1958. وهذه المقدمات كلها كانت عبارة عن تمهيد لا بد منه للولوج في البحث المعمق عن أسباب سقوط النظام الملكي، وعن القوى السياسية التي استولت على السلطة في 14 تموز 1958، والأوضاع السياسية في شمال العراق بعد ثورة 1958، وحركة عبد الوهاب الشواف في الموصل سنة 1959، وعن المشكلة الكردية في العراق الجمهوري (عهد عبد الكريم قاسم)، وتفاقمها في عهد الرئيس عبد السلام عارف ثم في عهد حزب البعث. ويسترسل الكاتب في دراسة أوضاع الأقليات القومية والدينية في شمال العراق، ولا سيما المسيحيين والتركمان، فضلاً عن تحولات الثورة المسلحة الكردية في سنة 1974 ثم نهايتها في سنة 1975. وفي هذا السياق لا يغفل المؤلف الكلام على التفصيلات السياسية لما جرى منذ إعلان بيان 11 آذار 1970 القاضي بمنح الأكراد الحكم الذاتي، حتى انهيار الثورة المسلحة، وأسباب فشل الحركة الكردية والنتائج المباشرة لحروب الشمال. هذا الكتاب مرجع مهم للدارسين والإعلاميين ولا سيما للباحثين في شؤون المنطقة العربية وفي التاريخ السياسي للعراق الحديث الذي دشن ظهوره في سنة 1920، وانهار مع الاحتلال الأميركي في سنة 2003.
