لقد دعوتُ هذا الكتاب ما قبل الأدب الحديث: النٌّخبة العالِمة في حائل، وكان رجائي، حِين أنشأتُ أكتبه، أنْ أجْلُوَ طَوْراً مِنْ أطوار التَّاريخ الثَّقافي الَّذي انطوتْ عليه هذه المدينة، ذلك التَّاريخ الضَّارب في القِدَم، منذ أنبأَنا امرؤ القيس أنَّ شاعراً طائياً حائليَّاً يُدْعَى ابنَ حِذَام، كان قدْ عَلّمَه، وعَلَّمَ الشُّعراء مِنْ بَعْده، كيف يَقِفون على الأطلال وكيف بيكون الدِّيار.
عُوجاً عَلَى الطَّلَلِ المُحِيلِ لَعَلَّنَا... نَبْكِي الدِّيَارَ كَمَا بَكَى ابْنُ حِذَام
على أنَّني لمْ أشأُ أنْ أَجُوز تاريخها الحديث، فثقافتَها - ما قَبْلَ الأدب الحديث - أردْتُ، تلك الثَّقافة الَّتي دأبتْ حياتنا الأدبيَّة والثَّقافيَّة في غير بلدٍ عربيّ، في عصرنا الحاضر، على أنْ تُعْرِض عنها، حتَّى إذا اتَّفق أنْ سِيقَ شيء مِنْها، على إختلاف البلدان، فليس سوى الإزراء والبَخْس والتَّنديد، وما اضْطُرَّنا إلى ذلك إلاَّ تباطؤنا عنِ الدَّرس والبحث والتَّفتيش، واستنامتنا إلى المُعاد والمكرور مِنَ الأحكام والأفكار، دون أن يُكَلِّف أحدنا نَفْسه، فيَفْرغ، حِيناً مِنَ الدَّهْر، للوقوف على آثارها، وقراءتها على وَفْق ما يتقاضاه العصْر الَّذي تعتزي إليه.
