من نقطة قريبة من النهاية تبدأ رواية "عباءات محترقة" للروائي سليم الشيخلي، وتتخذ مساراً دائرياً بين وقائع تبدأ بالعراق وتنتهي بعمَان، ولعل هذا الشكل الذي اصطنعه الروائي يشكل حد تعبير عن حكاية الإنسان العراقي، فالدائرة تعبر عن الحلقة المقفلة التي مثَلها نظام مستبد إلى آخر محتل ووقوع العراقي في منصف هذه الدائرة.
في هذا الإطار تبدو شخصية (أم حسين)، المحورية في النص، هي شخصية إشكاليةـ تجمع بين المسكنة والنوجَس والقلق، من الحياة الجديدة التي ننتظرها في عمان وهي لا تزال على الطريق في سيارة أجرة تحاول عبور الحدود بسلام، وهو ما يتمظهر عبر منولوج داخلي تسرد فيه الشخصية الرئيسية حياتها منذ طفولتها مروراً بمقتل زوجها فدخولها الحياة بائعة للخضروات في الكرادة ثم بائعة دخان وساعات مهربة في شوارع عمَان ورجوعها إلى بغداد ثانية، وهو الشئ الذي حاول الروائي قوله تعبيراً عن الأوضاع السياسية والإجتماعية في العراق والتي تكون (أم حسين) ضحيتها ومن معها من النساء والرجال والأطفال، وقد صاغه بلغة تلامس المستوى الشعري وتمتلك قدرةً واضحة على التصوير في وصف الأماكن والأشياء. ولعل حيويتها ناجمة عن هذه المزاوجة بين الوصف والسرد، وعن التنوع في صيغ الخطاب الموجه إلى العالم وحيوتها ناجمة عن هذه المزاوجة بين الوصف والسرد، وعن التنوع في صيغ الخطاب الموجه إلى العالم عن بلاد مستقل، هذه المواصفات تجعل الخطاب الروائي راهناً، ينتمي إلى المشهد الروائي الراهن، ويدخل مع الحكاية في علاقة تكامل، ما يجعل من "عباءات محترفة" أكثر تعبيراً عن بلاد ما تزال تحترق.
