معجم العلاق معجم إشراقي مليء بالعناصر ومفردات الطبيعة الخصوبية، ولذا فإن أول ما يلفت النظر في شعره تلك اللغة المحففة الفارهة، وتلك العبارة الأنيقة اللذية التي تضعك في ما يشبه المحراب اللغوي، وإمساكه المدهش بالدلالة، بالإضافة إلى لجوئه الملفت إلى استخدام الأوزان الخليطة التي تصعد ترقيص اللغة، وتجعلها أكثر خفة وحبوراً وعلياناً. في هذه المجموعة، تنهمك القصيدة ي نبش المفقودات والمنسيات بلغة نوستالجية عميقة، وتشتبك الدلالة بين الوطن الذي كان (وطناً لطيور الماء) والوطن الذي أصبح أشد خراباُ وأسى من أى بلاد أخرى، حيث طيور الماء-التي جفت مثلما جف ماؤها-"تهب من النوم يابسة، وكأن الفرات العصي الجريح/ينحني.." وكثيراً ما تبدأ القصيدة بتساؤل مليء بالأسى. إن الوطن الضائع هو ذلك الوطن المقيم في السؤال، وهو وطن لكل الممالك السرية الضائعة. هكذا يستدعي الوطن سلسلة طويلة من رموز الفقد: جلجامش، أنكيدو، بابل، ليلى العامرية، فاطمة، كما يستدعي مشاهد الطفولة، والطلليات، والمراثي، ويحشدها جميعاً، في ما يشبه مشهد الندب الكربلائي، ضمن نشيج كوني على ما ضاع. هنا يكتب الشاعر العربي المعاصر من داخل "لحظة طلليلة" لا تكتفي بالندب، بل تهجس وتستشرف وتمتلئ بالمتاقات وتحفر نفقها السري لتسريب الضوء. تضيع الممالك، يبقى الشعر ليدل على ما لا يضيع. هذه مجموعة تعيد إلينا الثقة بالقصيدة التي توشك هي أيضاً أن تكون إحدى الممالك الضائعة.
