"لا يكون النقد كلاماً ثانياً على كلامٍ أوّل دائماً. بل هو نفسه قد يمتلك نشوة الكلام الأول، ولذته المنعشة للذات وللآخرين، وفيه ما في المبادرة الأولى من جمالياتٍ تتجاوز مألوف القول النقديّ، فإذا هو نشاطٌ خاصٌّ يحكُّ صدأ اللغة، ويبتكر مساراته المميزة، ليكون، بمعنىً من المعاني، فعلاً إبداعياً يمدّنا بالوعي والبهجة والمعرفة.
وفي هذه المقالات والدراسات، يحاول علي جعفر العلاق، أن يمرّ على الحياة باعتبارها نصوصاً وعلى النصوص باعتبارها حياةً داخل اللغة: من حياة جبرا إبراهيم جبرا في صعودها الباهر إلى ذبولها التراجيديّ المحتشد بالمعني، مروراً بالسياب في ذراه أو انحداراته ، ثم سركون بولص، ومحمد عفيفي مطر، وأمجد ناصر في شعريتهم المغايرة.
وأخيراً نلتقي بالجواهري في جمالياتٍ يبحث عنها في وعورة الكلام حيناً، وفي غضب النفس وغرابة المزاج حيناً آخر، ثم البردوني الذي عانت القصيدة الكلاسيكية على يديه الأمرّين، وهو يقحمها على الدوام في ما لم تعهده من موضوعاتٍ، وما لم تتسعْ له من أساليب، وصورٍ، واستعاراتٍ، وجمالياتٍ، وبذاءاتٍ أحياناً".
