كان لا بد للقصيدة العربية الحديثة، وهي تتوغل في وهدة الذات وما فيها من ذعل وأمل، ان تبحث عن وسائل جديدة في الأداء الشعري، وتقنيات لم تدخل مختبر القصيدة بعد. وربما كان القناع أكثر هذه الوسائل والتقنيات فاعلية. والقناع تقنية عني باستخدامها شعراء هامون في العالم، مثل ييتس، ازرا باوند، ت.س. اليوت. وكان الشاعر منهم يسعي، في استخدامه القناع، الى التعبير عن رؤياه للعالم من ناحية، والحيلولة دون سقوط القصيدة تحت هيمنة عواطفه المباشرة ومشاعره التلقائية من ناحية أخرى. وبذلك يصبح القناع محاولة شجاعة يبتعد الشاعر فيها عن ذاته، ليمنح قصيدته طابعاً لا شخصياً أو يعبر عن الموضوع الشعري بطريقة موضوعية لا أثر لنبرة الذات فيها. ذلك لأن القناع يوفر للقارئ فسحة جمالية يمكن له من خلالها أن يرى العمل الشعري دون ضغوط عاطفية أو ذاتية يسلطها كاتب القصيدة على القارئ.
