القارئ لكتاب الاصطخري يلاحظ في وضوح أن منهجه في التأليف يقوم على أسس ثلاثة أولا المشاهدة والوصف وفق الرؤية ، وتجد ذلك واضحا في حديثه عن إقليم ما وراء النهر وديار ثمود وغيرها وثانيا تجري الدقة جهد الطاقة مخالفا غيره تارة ومتفقا تارة أخرى وثالثا سماع الأخبار والاقتصاد في روايتها ولقد بين ذلك في مقدمة كتابه قائلا: " فقد يوجد في الأخبار ولا يتعذر على من أراد تقصى شئ من ذلك من أهل كل بلد ، ولذلك تحرى الاقتصاد في الرواية وأثبت ما هو ضروري ومكمل لكتابه مما رآه متفقا ومنهجه في الصحة والمنطق والتصوير.
و لايخفي على الباحث أن الرجل أنفق السنين الأخيرة من حياته مؤلفا لهذا الكتاب. المحقق محمد جابرالحيني
