اعتقد كثيرون أن كوارث ومآسى القرن الماضي التى انكوت بنارها البشرية يستحيل أن تتكرر.. كانت هناك قناعة بأن القادم قد يكون سيئاً، ولكنه بأي حال من الأحوال لن يكون أسوأ .. فما شهده القرن العشرون المنصرم من حروب وأوبئة وكوارث أخرى طبيعية، أو من صنع الإنسان، سقط ضحيتها ملايين البشر ما بين قتلى وجرحى، ودمرت معها مدناً، وابتلعت معها مكاسب حضارية، لطالما بذل من أجلها العالم الغالي والنفيس، لكي يحصل عليها. ولكن وعكس جميع التوقعات، جاء القرن الواحد والعشرون أسوأ من القرن الذي سبقه، وأكثر وحشية ودموية وأشد إيلاماً وعذاباً، ومفعماً بكل صور الشقاء الإنساني في أبشع صوره!! فقد افتتح القرن الواحد والعشرون سنته الأولى بهجمات الحادى عشر من سبتمبر، وتبعتها حروب أفغانستان والعراق وتفجرات أخرى وكوارث طبيعية وأوبئة خطيرة والكثير من الكوارث التى نقدمها في هذا الكتاب لا ستلهام العبرة منها، ولاتخاذ الإجراءات الكفيلة للقضاء عليها، أو الحد من آثارها إذ لم يكن من الممكن إيقافها.
