في كتابه هذا، يشرح الدكتور محمد حسين منصور النظرية العامة لقانون العمل، والتأثير المتبادل بين القانون والإقتصاد من جهة وبين البعد الإجتماعي والبعد الإقتصادي من جهة أخرى، فيما خص قانون العمل، فالمؤلف يعتبر أنه ينبغي على المشرع، عند القيام بسن تشريعات العمل، مراعاة الآثار الإقتصادية والإجتماعية لها كي تصدر على أسس سليمة، تحقق العدالة الإجتماعية المنشودة.
ولما كانت مهمة صياغة التشريعات العمالية على درجة كبيرة من الأهمية، جاء هذا الكتاب ليحيط بكل ما يختص بقانون العمل بشكل عام، وعقد العمل الفردي بشكل خاص، من خلال إيراد المؤلف لنماذج من قوانين العمل في عدد من الدول العربية من بينها مصر ولبنان، ودول أخرى، ومن خلال دراسة المواد الخاصة بقانون العمل في كل بلد.
وبناءً عليه انطوت الدراسة في قسمين: القسم الأول: تمهيد في النظرية العامة لقانون العمل، وماهية قانون العمل، ويضم ثلاثة فصول، يشرح الأول "المقصود بقانون العمل"، بينما يتحدث الثاني عن "خصائص وذاتية قانون العمل"، ويوضح الثالث "نطاق قانون العمل".
أما القسم الثاني فيتناول "موضوعات قانون العمل (علاقات العمل الفردية والجماعية)"، ومنها إبرام عقد العمل، ومقدمات عقد العمل، والتراضي على عقد العمل، وإلتزامات العامل، وإلتزامات صاحب العمل (حقوق العامل)، والأسباب العامة لإنقضاء عقد العمل، وآثار إنقضاء عقد العمل (تعويض الصرف)، ومسائل أخرى ذات صلة.
