في روايته "قنص" يتخذ عواض العصيمي من الصحراء مرآة للذات البدوية ومحفزاً على العيش، في هذا العالم المرجعي الذي تحيل إليه الرواية، يقوم السارد بتفكيك نمط العيش من عادات وتقاليد، ويُعرّي البنية العقلية (الذهنية) التي تخضع الأفراد أنفسهم لها طوعاً لا كراهية، فهي جزء من حيواتهم ونسيجهم المجتمعي.
ولأن "قنص" مفردة تشير إلى أحد أنماط العيش في الصحراء، اتخذها العصيمي عنواناً دالاً على المستوى التعبيري الذي نجد فيه الترابط بين الحدث الواقعي والمتخيّل.
في تظهر الحكاية، يبدو الدربيل قناصاً بارعاً، وحش طواف يطارد العذراوات ولا يمكن الوقوف في وجهه، جاء وصفه "مسخ" تكون من الرمل الخشن اليابس، خمسة من قشور الدود وأظافر الموتى، وعيناه فتحتان ضيقتان في أسفلهما دمٌ وشعيرات سود... وهو في الوقت نفسه زوج بعض نساء الصحراء، يغير على البيوت ويؤذي أصحابها ولا يمكن مقاومة، هذه الصفات التي يحملها السارد للقناص، من البديهي أن تكون نتاج المخيلة البدوية إلى حدٍ كبير، والتي تعلق على الدربيل كثيراً من الأوهام والتخيلات، فيغدوا رمزاً للقوة الطاغية والشر المتربص بالآخرين، يقيم في أذهانهم الناس وينعكس على حياتهم وتصرفاتهم.
وإلى جانب هذه الشخصية المتخيلة "الدربيل" تقوم الرواية شخصية أخرى واقعية هي شخصية "فرحان القناص" وتشي بوجود صراع خفي بين الشخصيتين، وإن من طرق هذا الأخير على الأقل، مع العلم أن شخصيته موجودة بشكل مباشر في الرواية، بينما شخصية "الدربيل" ترد بشكل غير مباشر وذلك من خلال ما تناقلته عنه الشخصيات الأخرى.
"القناص" هي رواية الصراع بين الخير والشر، والواقع والخيال، والغرابة في الأجواء، ما يحيلها إلى نوع أدبي ينتمي إلى الواقعية السحرية.
