خلف العربي باطما (1948-1997) إلى جانب أعماله الغنائية والمسرحية وإلى جانب سيرته، عملا شعريا مطولا هو الذي نقدمه اليوم للقراء لقد احتل هذا العمل مكانة خاصة في حياته إذ أعلن في كتابيه، الرحيل والألم، أنه بصدد إنجاز أمل عمره. بل قال بالحرف بأنه قد انتهى من الجزأين ألأول والثاني منه وأنه ينوي « إكمال الجزء الثالث والأخير إن بقي في العمر لحظات لذلك» كان العربي باطما واعيا بأنه يكتب عملا أدبيا يشكل إضافة نوعية وغير مسبوقة في الزجل المغربين وقد قال في سيرته بأنه سيصارع المرض ويسابق الموت ليكتب مطولة شعرية« يفوز بها بالرقم القياسي في عدد الأبيات وهو واحد وعشرون ألف بيت» مضيفا « فعلى حسب علمي لم يكن هناك في يوم زجال فاق هذا العدد أو وصل إليه». لقد ارتبط إبداع هذا النص المدهش بحياة مليئة بالألم. صارع فيها العربي باطما كل عوامل الإحباط التي «تقبر المواهب» كما يقول هو نفسه، عوامل تتصل بالسياق التاريخي والاجتماعي الذي عاشه المغرب الحديث و الذي يظهر بوضوح في سيرته الرائعة كما تتصل بمقاومته للموت بشكل بطولي، مقاومة تبدو في هذا العمل الذي نقدمه والذي يمكن اعتباره انتصارا للخلود.
