كل واحد يدرك إلهه على صورته ومثاله، ويحسب ما يوحي به مخياله، فالنظرة إلى الإله بحسب القوام وثقافتهم ولغاتهم وأنساقهم النفسية والإجتماعية والتاريخية، إذ كل تجمّع إنساني يدرك إلهه على صورته ويحسب لغته، فالعبرانيون مثلاً يشكّلون إلههم من منظور يهودي والمسيحيون من منظور مسيحي واليونان من زاوية إغريقية والعرب برؤية وثنية أو توحيدية، وكذا الحال مع كل أمة وكل طائفة وكل مجموعة وكل قبيلة، بل هذا حال كل فرد من الناس يتخيل إلهه ويتوهمه ويصوّره ويشكّله بحسب صوره واستعاراته وتوهماته.
وإن فكرة تقديس المقدس لا يمكن فهمها أو تفسيرها أو تعليل بعض جوانبها على الأقل إلا من خلال العودة إلى الظروف التاريخية والإقتصادية والنفسية المصاحبة لظهورها، وكذا الأمر بالنسبة إلى الإحتفاء بالآلهة وأسباب نشوئها والغاية من عبادتها في حالة الأفراد وفي صورة الجمع، أي من حيث تنوّعها وتعدّدها وتباينها وجنسها وشكلها، ومن حيث المادة التي صُنعت منها ومن حيث الرمزية والوظيفة.
وهذا الكتاب غايته الوقوف على صورة الإله كما تكشّف لإنسان ما قبل الإسلام والأفكار التي عبّر بها العرب عن هذا المفهوم، ومن ثمّة عرض تاريخه وإيضاح مدلوله ورمزيته وخصائصه وأبعاده الإنسانية وأنساقه النفسية والأنثروبولوجية، وقد كان للأفكار المعبّرة عن هذا المفهوم أهميتها في حياة المجتمعات القديمة والحديثة على السواء، وفي تاريخ الفكر الديني بمفهومه الحالي.
