للمرّة الأولى، يصدر معجم يرتّب معبودات وآلهة العرب القدماء على حروف الهجاء. وتأتي أهمّية هذا المعجم من كون الحياة الدينية للإنسان لم تعرف تنوّعاً وكان لهذه البقعة الجغرافية من "جزيرة العرب" وتعدّداً كما هي عليه الحال في العالم تجارياً وسياسياً ما مكّنها من أن تصهر معتقدات الشعوب والحضارات التي زارتها تجارة أو غزواً منذ مراحل مبكرة من التاريخ البشري.
في دين العرب القدماء نجد آلهة كوكبية ونجد آلهة الخصب وآلهة الموت... ويأتي هذا التنوّع كصيرورة طبيعية لتطوّر الفكر الديني العربي الذي شكّل الإسلام آخر حلقاته، وامتدّ من جزيرة العرب إلى العالم بأسره.
في هذا المعجم استطاع المؤلّف أن يجمع أسماء مئات الأصنام والمعبودات، منها ما هو متداول بحكم تركيز الباحثين عليه، لكن كثيراً منها ظلّ مجهولاً.
