كان اللواء خالد نزار قائدا لأركان الجيش الجزائري ثم وزيرا للدفاع الوطني. فقد خصص جزء هامًا من كتابه هذا لأحداث حرب التحرير كما عاشها هو شخصيًا إلى غاية وقف إطلاق النار المبرم مع الجيش الفرنسي وذلك في المحيط الجغرافي حيث كان ينفذ العمليات العسكرية مع استعراض المراحل الأساسية لتصاعد قوة الجيش الجزائري. ألقى خالد نزار الضوء على الجانب العنيف للنزاع الذي دام سبع سنوات ونصف مذكرا بالأساليب التي لجأ إليها المستعمر للإستلاء على الجزائر ( اللجوء التلقائي إلى المذابح والتخريب والتعذيب...) التي تركت في مخيلة الشعب الجزائري أثرًا عميقا. بالإضافة إلى مذكرات الحرب هذه، باشر نـــــــزار بعرض تاريخي سريع قام به من خلاله بتحويل التغيرات المفاجئة إلى أحداث موضحًا الأفعال والأوضاع من وجهة نظر جديدة. قد يستغرب القارئ أن الرجال الذين وصف نزار مآثرهم سواء الذين استشهدوا في ساحة الشرف أم هم على قيد الحياة بالرغم من الأعمال الوحشية اليومية التي عايشوها –القصف العشوائي ضد السكان العزل وكذا المذابح والتعذيب- لم يعبروا أبدًا لا عن حقد ولا عن غضب اتجاه العدو، ذلك لأنَ إدراكهم للتاريخ يتجاوز الأقدار والعداوات الشخصية، وهذا ما حاول المؤلف إثباته من خلال مذكراته.
