هنا يوميات سيلفيا بلاث: 1950 - 1962، التي تكشف عن الميول الانتحارية لسيلفيا بلاث ورغبتها العارمة في الموت الذي وصفته في واحدة من قصائدها بأنه شيء يشبه الفن:"الموت فن..."كما تسرد وقائع احتجازها في مصحة للأمراض النفسية ومحاولتها الانتحار وهي في العشرين من عمرها قبل أن تتعرف إلى تيد هيوز، أثناء دراستهما معاً في جامعة كمبريدج البريطانية، وتصبح زوجة له. لم تنشر سيلفيا بلاث سوى القليل من الشعر خلال حياتها القصيرة. فقد نشرت مجموعتها الشعرية الأولى"التمثال"، التي قوبلت بالاستحسان والإعجاب، عام 1960، حيث بدأت العمل في الفترة التي تلتها على قصائدها التي ظهرت في مجموعتها الشعرية"أرييل"1965.
