يتضمن هذا الكتاب خمس رحلات إلى الجزائر قام بها أربعة أدباء وعلماء تونسيين وشاعر جزائري، ما بين 1904-1932، وهي يوميات تصور لنا بعض مدن الجزائر خلال الحقبة الاستعمارية الفرنسية؛ وتتضمن انطباعات هؤلاء الرحالة في فترة بدا فيها كل شيء مستكيناً ومستسلماً لإرادة الاستعمار. لكن هذا ما كان تقوله القشرة فقط عل سطح الحياة الجزائرية. هذه النصوص كتبت وتوجهت، أساساً، إلى القارئ التونسي، عبر صحافته، لإطلاعه على أوضاع المدن الجزائرية المحتلة وأحوال الناس فيها. إن الدوافع التي حملت الرحالة على زيارة الجزائر تكاد تكون واحدة، فضلاً عن أنها تغطّي منطقة جغرافية واحدة هي تلك الواقعة شرق الجزائر وجنوبها، وفي قليل من الحالات تجاوز أصحابها إلى وصف العاصمة؛ وهي رحلات يكمل بعضها بعضاً من حيث التغطية الزمنية، لكونها أنجزت في سنوات متلاحقة، ويمكن من خلالها ترتيب أجزاء الصورة الواحدة التي تبعثرت إلى أشلاء خلال حقبة هي الأقسى في حياة الجزائريين.
