هذه المذكرات ليست مجرد تجميع لما ألّفه اللواء خالد نزار. بل إنّها تضيف عليه توضيحات وإضاءات جديدة على الأحداث وعلى صنّاعها، وتصحّح العديد من المغالطات الشائعة وتجري مسحا واسعا على الأحداث الكبرى التي كان فاعلا فيها أو شاهدا عليها. ولا يدعي المؤلف بتاتا الاضطلاع بدور المؤرخ وإنما يدلي بشهادته كعضو في جيش التحرير الوطني، ويروي كيف اضطرت الجزائر، فور نيلها للاستقلال، لمواجهة المخططات العدوانية للمملكة المغربية في أكتوبر 3691 والحماس الوطني الفيّاض الذي عبّر عنه المواطنون بتلك المناسبة، ويلخص أوضاعا معقدة مثل الأحداث التي عرفتها منطقة القبائل، والرؤى المختلفة التي دفعت بالعقيدين شعباني وزبيري لمحاولة قلب مجرى الأمور عن طريق التمرد العسكري، وفترة حكم أحمد بن بلة، ويحدثّنا عن بومدين وأولوياته، وعن بن جديد ومسؤولياته وأيضا مزاياه. كما يدعو المؤلف القارئ الشاب إلى مرافقته إلى حدود قناة السويس في مصر، ليثير في نفسه الفخر والإباء لأن أسلافه برهنوا أمام الجيش الإسرائيلي المشهور عالميا على قدراتهم التكتيكية وشجاعتهم. يعرج الجزء الأول من مذكرات اللواء خالد نزار على الفترة الحاسمة التي خرج فيها الجيش مكرها ومرغما، أمام إفلاس الحكّام وأعمال الشغب العبثية، عن دورها التقليدي لإنقاذ البلاد. تمثّل الصفحات التي يفردها المؤلف لهذه الوقائع عرضا موجزا وضروريا سيناقش بالتفصيل في الجزء الثاني، لفهم مجريات الأحداث.
