ولدت إيميلي نوثومب في مدينة كوبه اليابانيّة لدبلوماسي بلجيكي، عاشت في اليابان حتى عمر الخامسة، بعدها انتقلت إلى الصين ونيويورك وبنغلاديش وبورما ولاوس، إميلي سليلة عائلة سياسيّة بامتياز فهي ابنة شقيق وزير خارجية بلجيكا السابق كارلوس فيريناند نوثومب وحفيدة الكاتب والسياسي اليمينيّ بيير نوثومب.
نشرت إميلي روايتها الأولى نظافة قاتل عام 1992، وبعدها بدأت إميلي تنشر قصائدها ومؤلفاتها تباعاً سنة بعد سنة، أثناء وجودها في اليابان دخلت نوثومب مدرسة محليّة وتعلّمت اللغة اليابانيّة، وعند بلوغها عامها الخامس انتقلت مع عائلتها إلى الصين، وفي سن 17 انتقلت للعيش في بروكسيل وهناك درست فقه اللغة في جامعة بروكسل الحرة أثناء تواجدها في وطنها الأم شعرت إيميلي بغربة شديدة، لاحقاً ورغم معارضة عائلتها انتقلت للعمل في شركة يابانيّة في العاصمة طوكيو، تحدثت عن تجربتها هذه في كتابها ذهول ورهبة.

الكتاب من ترجمة محمد عبد الكريم إبراهيم. «تشير الساعة الآن إلى التاسعة والنصف. أمامي أربع ساعات لأشبع هذه الحاجة الغريبة، وهي كتابة ما لن يُقرأ. يبدو أننا ساعة الموت نرى شريط حياتنا في غمضة عين. عما قريب سأعرف إن كان هذا صحيحاً. يعجبني هذا الاحتمال، ولا أحب أن أفوّت على نفسي أفضل ما في قصتي مهما كلفني ذلك». فما هي تلك المذكرات التي يكتبها من ينوي تفجير طائرة في الساعات الأربع التي تسبق فعلته؟ ما هي المشاعر التي تنتابه تجاه نفسه وأهله وأصدقائه ومجتمعه؟ ما الذكريات التي تراوده في هذه الساعات القليلة التي سينهي بعدها حياته وحياة أبرياء لا ذنب لهم سوى أن رافقهم في الطائرة ذاتها رجل إرهابي ينوي ارتكاب جريمة غريزية عن سابق قصدٍ وتصميم؟ هذا ما تسرده لنا رحلة الشتاء. «خلال ساعات معدودة ستنفجر طائرة إثر قيامي باختطافها. لن يقل عدد الضحايا عن المئة رغم اتخاذي للحيطة والحذر. أكتب، وهذا ليس تهكماً، بأن جميع الضحايا أبرياء».
