في مقابل التعصب والأصولية الدينية لدى بعض المؤمنين الذين يستبيحون كل مخالف لهم، هناك أصولية ثقافية وانغلاقية علموية لدى بعض الأكاديميين، الذين أغراهم انسجام ميولهم النفسانية مع الخطاب السياسي العالمي السائد، الذي بات جذلاً بانتصاره على اللاهوت والدين، ليتحول إلى آليات قمعية للمخالفين. وقد كان كتاب (وهم الإله) لريتشارد دوكنز، وكتاباته الأخرى، جزءاً من هذه النماذج التي تخلط بين الإعلام والعلم، وتجنح بالبحث العلمي إلى سجالات جدالية عنيفة، ما كنا نستطيع محاورته ونقده إلا باستعمال منهجه بشكل معاكس. لذا لم نخرج في هذه المراجعة عن كتابات دوكنز نفسه، بعيداً عن تكثير الأدلة والدخول في عرض كتب اختصاصية مطولة، بل لم نجد ثمة حاجة حتى إلى استعمال جملة المصطلحات الأكاديمية في كل حقل، فطريقة دوكنز الجدالية المشحونة بخطاب عنيف واستهزائي أكثر من كونه استدلالياً، ونقلي أكثر منه إبداعياً، وتكراري أكثر منه امتيازياً، أغنانا عن كل ذلك وسهّل عملية تبسيط الكتاب والمحاجّة معاً. لذا اعتمدنا على ما كتبه دوكنز نفسه، مع ملاحظة أننا لسنا بصدد شرح الداروينية أو الرد عليها كما فعل جملة من الإسلاميين إلى مستوى بلغ تسطيحها وتشويهها واعتماد لغة التكذيب والمؤامرة، وبعض هذه المستويات مُحرج فعلاً في سذاجته وقصور معلوماته التي تبلغ انتقائية مثيرة للشفقة حقاً.
