يدعو هذا الكتاب المثقفين إلى إعادة التفكير بالظاهرتين المسيحية والإسلامية من أجل السلام والعدل والحرية في بلادنا وفي العالم، إذ لا بدّ من إعادة النظر في الأسس المنهجية والمعرفية لما يُسمى بــ"الحوار المسيحي - الإسلامي"، إذا أردنا بلوغ هذه الغايات النبيلة.
لقد فشلت جميع مؤتمرات الحوار المسيحي - الإسلامي حتى الآن لأنها رفضت أن تُناقش المصداقية التاريخية والأخلاقية للديانتين التاريخيتين: المسيحية والإسلام، فجئنا في هذا الكتاب ننتقد أفكاراً مسيحية نراها تعيق الحوار المنشود، ونتصدى للإسلاموية التي تريد أن تجعل الإسلام فكرة وممارسة أيديولوجية ليس إلاّ، ولئن كنا لا ننساق مع العلمانوية التي تبغي القضاء على فكرة الدين حتى كموضوع ثقافي علمي، إلا أننا نشدّد على أهمية النقد العلماني من أجل فهم أفضل لعالمنا المعاصر.
لذلك، كان موقفنا موقفاً نقدياً موضوعياً، وشفّافاً إلى أبعد الحدود سواء بالنسبة إلى الجماعات الدينية التي ترفض أية مناقشة لعقائدها الدينية، او بالنسبة للعلمانويين أنفسهم الذين يظنون أن إيجاد حلول جذرية لمشاكل الأديان التقليدية مضيعة للوقت، ومن هنا جِدَّة وفرادة هذا الكتاب، على ما نظن.
