بالرغم من كون المجموعات العصب الرئيسي للرياضيات المعاصرة، إلا أنها عرفت عند الرياضيين منذ القدم وذلك باستخدام لمجموعات من عناصر متشابهة. وتعتبر البداية الحقيقية لنظرية المجموعات في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر وبداية القرن العشرين عن طريق جورج كانتور الذي درس خواطر المجموعات وبحث في المالا نهاية عن طريق مجموعات الأعداد. وقام العديد من العلماء الرياضيات في القرن العشرين بدراسات تفصيلية لنظرية المجموعات وعلى رأسهم بيرتواند رسل والمعروف بمحيّرته المشهورة Russel paradox، وفان نيومان... وغيرهم، حتى أصبحت المجموعات من المواضيع الأساسية اللازمة لدراسة العلوم التطبيقية المختلفة ولا سيقتصر دراستها على الرياضيين فقط. وتعتبر نظرية المجموعات بشكل بموضوعاتى هو الشكل المرضي لعلماء الرياضيات والمنطق ولكن موضوعيات نظرية المجموعات ليست بسهلة، ولا بسيطة على الطالب المبتدئ في دراسة الرياضيات، ولهذا كتب هذا الكتاب بطريقة إدراكية للحصول على النظرية الكاملة لنظرية المجموعات. وهو يحاول تغطية الموضوعات الضرورية للمواد المستقبلية في دراسة علم الرياضيات مثل البيولوجى، التحليل، والجبر المجرد...الخ. ولا شك أن الطالب الذي يحتاج إلى دراسة نظرية المجموعات ليس من الضروري أن يكون من طلبة الرياضيات وبالتالي سيجد في هذا الكتاب رفيقاً جيداً له لأنه لا يحتاج إلى خلفية رياضية أكثر من خلفية مبادئ التفاضل والتكامل. في الفصل الأول سيجد القارىء فكرة مبسطة عن المنطق، وفي الفصل الثاني سيجد دراسة تتعرض للمجموعات الجزائية وبعض العلميات عليها. أما في الفصل الثالث فسيجد دراسة تتعرض لدوال وللعلاقات وما يتعلق بها، وسيتطرق مع الفصل الرابع على المجموعات القابلة للعدّ وغير القابلة للعد، كما وسيتعرف في الفصل الخامس مفهوم المجموعات المرتبة وكل ما يتعلق بها، وسيجد في الفصل السادس دراسة موضوعاً الإعداد الأصلية والأعداد الترتيبية.
