المصفوفات لغة وأداة رياضية مهمة لها دور بارز، فهي العامل المشترك في الكثير من التطبيقات الرياضية، الفيزيائية، الهندسية، الكيميائية، الإحصائية، الاقتصادية،... الخ.
النموذج الرياضي للمسائل الواقعية يحتم استخدام المصفوفات، ولهذا لا بد من دراسة وافية وبشكل مفصل لنظرية المصفوفات، والبحث دائماً عن مفاهيم ونظريات حديثة تواكب التطورات العلمية المتسارعة وتلبي الحاجة لاستخدام المصفوفات، لذا فإن البحوث الرياضية قطعت شوطاً كبيراً في مجال الصفوفات، ويعزي ذلك إلى الحاجة العلمية والتطبيقية لهذا المجال، إضافة إلى التطور السريع في مجال الحاسب الآلي والذي سهل وبشكل مذهل الحسابات الرقمية للحلول العددية للمسائل المصفوفية.
يعتبر هذا المرجع محاولة لتبسيط طرق وأفكار مصفوفية جعلت نظرية المصفوفات تدرس بطريقة مبسطة خالية من التعقيد تؤدي إلى معرفة جديدة لنظرية المصفوفات، وليس مطلوب من القارئ إلا معرفة جيدة بحساب التفاضل والتكامل.
ظهر العديد من المفاهيم المصفوفية الحديثة خلال العقدين الأخيرين من القرن العشرين والتي تواكب الحاجة الماسة لهذه الأفكار، ومنها ضرب كرونكر الذي عرض في الفصل الثامن من هذا الكتاب، كما تم التطرق إلى تطبيقات ضرب كرونكر في العديد من المسائل المختلفة.
يغطي الكتاب مفردات الجبر الخطي لطلبة العلوم والهندسة إضافةً إلى كليات المعلمين والمعاهد العليا، ويعتبر وجهاً ممتازاً لطلبة الدراسات العليا حيث طرحت مفاهيم حديثة قيد البحث والتطوير.
ذيل هذا الكتاب بالعديد من التمارين التي تتدرج من الحسابات المباشرة إلى التمارين التي تحتاج إلى بعض الأفكار لحلها، وحل التمارين يلعب دوراً كبيراً في فهم نظرية المصفوفات لأن بعض التمارين تحتوي على بعض القواعد والقوانين المتعلقة بالموضوع قيد الدراسة، فقد أضيف في نهاية كل بند العديد من التمرينات، كما أضيف الكثير من التمارين في نهاية كل فصل.
