يتفق معظم أعضاء هيئة التدريس والمعلمون أن العمل في مجال الرياضيات بالجامعات والمعاهد العليا أصبح صعباً في غياب المراجع والكتب المناسبة وذلك بسبب ظهور تغييرات جوهرية في طرق معالجة فروع الرياضيات المختلفة ونتيجة لذلك أصبح من الضروري معالجة المسائل الرياضية التي سبق معالجتها في كتب ومراجع تقليدية، بعرض جملة من الأمثلة المناسبة وأن يظهر الكتاب على شكل مذكرة واضحة وخصوصاً في فروع الجبر وحساب المثلثات والحسبان.
إن وضع خطوط فاصلة بين هذه المواضيع يبدو مستحيلاً في هذه الأيام. فمثلاً يستخدم الحسبان وطرقه في معالجة الجبر وحساب المثلثات كما يستخدم حساب المثلثات في معالجة الجبر والحسبان بكثرة. وهكذا لا يمكن أن يكون هناك مرجع ناجح في الجبر مثلاً يحاول الاعتماد باستقلالية بحتة، دون التعرّض لمواضيع في الحسبان، على طرق جبرية بحتة.
لقد وضع علماء الرياضيات في السابق اللوغاريتمات ضمن موضوعات الجبر حتى ظهر تعريف اللوغاريتمات بواسطة التكامل، الأمر الذي نقل موضوع اللوغاريتمات إلى كتب الحسبان. ولكن التطبيق وضح صعوبة في عدم احتواء كتب الجبر، وخصوصاً في المراحل الأولى، على موضوع اللوغاريتمات. وهكذا وجد "رمضان محمد جهيمة" أنه من المهم وضع في متناول يد الطالب هذا الكتاب الذي يحتوي على مقدمة عامة للحسبان تشتمل على مواضيع مختلفة في الجبر وحساب المثلثات ومبادئ الحسبان لتكون وحدة من المواضيع التي لا بد من الدراسة بها قبل دراسة متقدمة في حساب التفاضل والتكامل أو في الجبر وحساب المثلثات، هذا وقد جاءت موضوعات الكتاب مقسمة على تسعة أبواب هي: الباب الأول: أساسيات، الباب الثاني: المعادلة التربيعية، الباب الثالث: الحدوديات Polynomials، الباب الرابع: الاستنتاج الرياضي، الباب الخامس: الكسور الجزئية، الباب السادس: الدوال Functions، الباب السابع: النهايات LimitsK، الباب الثامن: استمرارية الدوال Continuily، الباب التاسع: حساب المثلثات Trigonometry.
