يعد الجبر فرعاً من أقدم فروع الرياضيات، وأكثرها إجابة عن متطلبات العلوم الرياضية، وقد أثره تطوره وما زال يؤثر على تطور العلوم ذات العلاقة به، بفضل إتساع مجال التطبيقات في علم الجبر، وهذا ما يميزه عن غيره، لذا يقال: إنه ربما تحدث في الوقت الراهن عملية تجبير للرياضيات.
وتحتل نظرية الزمر مكان الصدارة في البنى الجبرية، التي تعد بدورها فرعاً أساسياً من فروع الجبر الحديث، وترتبط نظرية الزمر إرتباطاً وثيقاً بثلاث نظريات أخرى في الرياضيات، وهي نظرية الأعداد، ونظرية المعادلات الجبرية، وفي الهندسة، ولنظرية الزمر تطبيقات عديدة، ليست فقط في العلوم الرياضية بل حتى علوم الفيزياء، والكيمياء، والعلوم الهندسية، وكذلك في أبحاث الفضاء.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدي القراء ليزود الطالب بالمفاهيم الجبرية الأساسية أولاً، ثم دراسة الزمر بأنواعها وخصائصها ثانياً، كما جاء ليقدم دراسة التطبيقات الممكنة لنظرية الزمر، إلى جانب أنه إسهام من المؤلفين في إغناء المكتبة العربية، حيث إنها تفتقر إلى مراجع في العلوم الرياضية، وخاصة في العلوم الجبرية.
وقد توخينا المؤلف في كتابه هذا سهولة العرض، مع المحافظة على الدقة العلمية المطلوبة، والإكثار من الأمثلة والتمارين المحلولة وغير المحلولة (يحتوي الكتاب على 445 مسألة محلولة وغير محلولة) حتي يتمكن القارئ من فهم المقرر الفهم الصحيح، ويكتسب المهارة الكافية التي تمكنه من حل ما يواجهه من مسائل في الكتاب وخارجه بذاته.
