إن علم الرياضيات، الذي نشأ في القدم عن حاجة المجتمع إلى تنظيم حياته ومعاملاته وأموره الخاصة، ما فتئ منذ نشأته يتطور ويتجدد ويتسع، وما زالت مناهجه يعتريها ما يعتري الحياة ذاتها من تغيير وتطوير.
وتطوير مناهج الرياضيات ضرورة تحتمها متطلبات الحياة الحاضرة والإعداد لحياة المستقبل، فقد غزت الرياضيات فروع العلوم الأخرى، وحياة الناس اليومية، وانتشر إستخدام الحاسبات الإلكترونية في عالم الصناعة والتجارة والعمل مما صبغ حياة العصر بصيغة هي في صميمها رياضية.
وما تستلزمه هذه الحياة من معارف رياضية أمر لا بد منه لكل مجتمع نام أو متطور.
إذا أرادت مؤسسات التعليم أن تقوم بواجبها بحق في إعداد الأجيال لخدمة المجتمع وسد حاجته من خبرات عقلية وثقافية ورياضية، فلا بد لها من أن تعيد النظر في المناهج القائمة في ضوء حاجات المجتمع، وتفسح المجال للمناهج الحديثة والمتطورة من أن تأخذ مكانها اللائق بها، وكان لا بد من إعادة النظر في المناهج القائمة من مدرسية وجامعية، بغية نبذ الطرق والأفكار والمفاهيم التي لم تعد ذات بال لتحل محلها طرق وأفكار ومفاهيم أوثق صلة بالتيار الفكري الحديث.
وعلاوة على التغييرات والتطورات الهائلة التي طرأت في حقل الرياضيات كانت هناك النظريات التربوية الحديثة التي أثرت تأثيراً ملحوظاً على إعادة تنظيم تدريس الرياضيات تنظيماً مبنياً على مراحل تطور النمو الفكري للمتعلم، بالإضافة إلى التنظيم المنطقي لمحتوى مادة الرياضيات ذاتها، وقد أوصت هذه النظريات بتبني وسائل وأساليب حديثة في التدريس والتقليل من إتباع وإعتماد الطرق التقليدية والعشوائية.
