الهدف من هذا المشروع ابتداء تلبية حاجة عارضة ظهرت لدى المؤلف عندما كلف بتدريس مساق "مناهج الرياضيات وأساليب تدريسها" للملتحقين ببرنامج معلم الصف في جامعة الزرقاء الأهلية عام 1988م، ولم يكن ثمة مرجع واحد يشتمل على المفردات التي وردت في وصف المساق... فكان لزاماً عليه أن يقوم بواجب توفير مادة مطبوعة بين أيدي الطلبة لتسهل عليهم التفاعل في مناقشة موضوعات المساق والوفاء بمتطلبات النجاح فيه. وهكذا تجمع لديه مجموعة من المحاضرات شكلت محتوى هذا الكتاب.
وقد وزعت محتويات الكتاب على سبعة فصول: تناول الفصل الأول طبيعة الرياضيات وخصائصها، وتناول الفصل الثاني مناهج الرياضيات في الصفوف الأربعة الأولى من المرحلة الأساسية في الأردن مع الإشارة إلى مفهوم المنهاج وعناصره وأهداف تدريس الرياضيات في المرحلة الابتدائية.
أما الفصل الثالث فقد تحدث عن أسس التعلم مع التركيز على طبيعة التعلم والعوامل والشروط التي تؤثر فيه، كما تمت الإشارة إلى نظريات بياجيه وبرونر ودنز وانعكاساتها على نمو التفكير عند الأطفال فيما يتصل بتدريس الرياضيات. وتناول الفصلان الرابع والخامس مفاهيم الأعداد والعمليات الحسابية وأساليب تدريسها باستخدام فكرة المجموعات ومفاهيم التناظر الأحادي والتكافؤ فيها، وطريقة كويزنير القائمة على أساس اللعب.
أما الفصل السادس فقد تحدث بإيجاز عن التخطيط في تدريس الرياضيات. وأما الفصل السابع والأخير فقد تناول بشيء من التفصيل التقويم التربوي واختبارات التحصيل في الرياضيات. وقد الحق بالكتاب نماذج لخطط سنوية ويومية وأخرى لدروس صفية لبعض المفاهيم لإعطاء فكرة عن واقع التطبيق لبعض الأفكار والأساليب الواردة في الكتاب. وقد حاول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب تناول العناصر الأساسية للموضوع وعرضها بطريقة متوازنة وبسيطة بما يتلاءم مع الغرض الذي وضع من أجله دون إفراط أو تفريط مع قناعته بأن ثمة كتباً متخصصة تتناول موضوعات الكتاب بالتفصيل لمن أراد التوسع والتعمق في أي جانب من جوانبه.
