ساعدت الوسائل التعليمية بأنواعها المختلفة في تغيير النظرة إلى الرياضيات من مادة جافة مجردة إلى مادة حية ديناميكية نشطة ومرتبطة بحياة وبيئة المتعلم اليومية وهو السر الذي ساهم في تسهيل عملية تقديم المادة التعليمية من قبل المعلم وعملية اكتسابها من قبل المتعلم. وبشكل عام فإن الوسيلة التعليمية هي كل أداة تساعد المتعلم على التعلم مثل الكتاب أو السبورة أو أي نموذج أو شكل مادي مُصنع أو غير مصنع. وتعد الوسائل التعليمية مكوناً رئيساً من مكونات الخطة الدراسية لأنها تصل بين المتعلم والمعرفة في النظرية التدريسية بشكل عام. ولما كانت المكتبة العربية فقيرة في مجال الوسائل التعليمية بسبب عدم احتوائها سوى على عدد محدود من الكتب في هذا المجال، فقد جاءت فكرة هذا الكتاب لتزويد المعلمين والمشرفين التربويين في الميدان بالإضافة إلى الطلبة وأولياء الأمور بنماذج تطبيقية وواقعية في مادة الرياضيات. ومما يعطي الكتاب أهمية خاصة هو أن معظم الوسائل التعليمية التي سيتم شرحها يمكن للطالب أو المعلم تصنيعها وتجهيزها في مواد البيئة المحلية لعامة الناس.
ويحتوي الكتاب على شرح بالتفصيل لعمل كثير من الوسائل التعليمية في منهاج الرياضيات في مستوى التعليم الأساسي. وقد تم عرض الوسائل التعليمية والشرح الخاص بكل منها بشكل متسلسل. ويمكن أن تكون الوسيلة الواحدة صالحة لتدريس الرياضيات في صفوف متعددة. وبالإضافة إلى تلك الوسائل فقد احتوى الكتاب على شرح موجز لبعض الوسائل التعليمية بين المعلمين في الوقت الحالي.
