التحديث في مناهج الرياضيات في المرحلة الإبتدائية الدنيا لم يقتصر على ما أدخل إليها من مفاهيم جديدة، بل تناول بشكل رئيسي النظرة الحديثة إلى الرياضيات، ودورها في خدمة الفرد والمجتمع، ومساهمتها في تنمية التفكير السليم وبناء شخصية الفرد وقدرته على الإبداع.
يجيء هذا الكتاب في أحد عشر فصلاً، تناول الفصل الأول منه مناهج الرياضيات للصفوف الدنيا وأبرز الكفايات الضرورية للطلبة في هذه المرحلة الدراسية. أما الفصل الثاني فقد تضمن ملخصاً للمبادئ والمعايير التي حددها المجلس الوطني الأمريكي (NCTM) لعام 2000. وتناول الفصل الثالث الأفكار الأساسية في لغة المجموعات مما يحتاجه المعلم لتدريس بعض موضوعات المنهاج.
تم تصنيف المعرفة الرياضية إلى مفاهيم وتعميمات ومهارات ومسائل، ويساعد هذا التصنيف في تحليل المحتوى والذي هو الخطوة الاولى في التخطيط لعملية التدريس وتحديد الأهداف. وتناول الفصلان الرابع والسادس هذين الموضوعين بالتفصيل. وقد تناول المؤلف في الفصل الخامس تطور وتنمية المعرفة الرياضية عند الأطفال.
تم تخصيص الفصل السادس والسابع: التخطيط لتدريس الرياضيات والوسائل التعليمية والألعاب التربوية المناسبة في دروس الرياضيات. أما الفصل الثامن فقد تناول عدداً معقولاً من نماذج وإستراتيجيات تدريس الرياضيات.
وخصص لحل المسألة فصلاً كاملاً من فصول هذا الكتاب هو الفصل التاسع. وقد تناول موضوع التفكير بأشكاله المختلفة: التفكير الناقد، والإبداعي والمنطقي وغيرها في الفصل العاشر.
اختتم هذا الكتاب بتناول اختبارات التحصيل وكيفية بنائها، وتمت الإشارة إلى الإختبارات المحكية المرجع واختبارات التشخيص.
