يسرد هذا الكتاب تجربة خمسة وعشرين عاماً من العمل مع الرئيس الشهيد رفيق الحريري، بدءاً من أواخر العام 1978. عاصرت هذه التجربة معظم سنوات الحرب اللبنانية ومن ثم اتفاق الطائف وما بعده. وتعاطت مع الشأن العام في القطاعين الخاص والعام، انطلاقاً من عمليات التنظيف والإعمار خلال وبعد الغزو الإسرائيلي لبيروت، مروراً بجمع النفايات وإصلاح أنابيب الماء والصرف الصحي وترميم الطرق والأرصفة، عندما كانت بلدية بيروت معطلة عن العمل. وفي المجال الإنساني، واكبت هذه التجربة عمليات توزيع المساعدات الغذائية وغيرها عندما انسدت في وجه كثير من اللبنانيين في مختلف المناطق سبل العيش، كما أ،ها أسهمت في تعليم أكثر من ثلاثين ألف طالب جامعي في لبنان والخارج عندما لم يبق أمام الشباب وسيلة للعمل سوى الانضمام إلى الميليشيات. ساهمت هذه التجربة في إنجاز اتفاق الطائف عندما يئس معظم اللبنانيين من إمكانية انتهاء الحرب. ثم كان الإعمار إنجازاً ضخماً في مرحلة السلم التالية. وقد تمت هذه الإنجازات كلها بتحريك وتحفيز وقيادة رفيق الحريري الذي تنافست في شخصه القدرة على العطاء بسخاء يندر مثله مع الرؤية والمغامرة. لقد قاد البلد إلى بر الأمان وأسهم في بناء لبنان الحديث في وقت كان غيره يعمل على تأبيد الحرب أو إلى استعادة ظروفها. اخترت أسلوب السؤال والجواب في صياغة هذا الكتاب لتقديم قراءة سهلة مستساغة. واستعنت بالصديق جورج فرشخ الذي ساهم مشكوراً بإعداد وصياغة النص. ما كان الرئيس الشهيد يحب التحدث عن نفسه. أملي أنني استطعت في هذا الكتاب إيفاءه بعض ما له علينا وعلى بلده ومجتمعه، وأنا واثق بأن التاريخ سيفيه حقه. الفضل شلق
