تُخبر منطقة الخليج العربي عن تحولات في عمق المجتمع وعلى أطرافه. تحولاتٌ ستقود إلى تغيّرات في نمط العلاقات الاجتماعية والسياقات الثقافية والهياكل الحاكمة لأنماط السلوك. تواجه هذه التغيّرات قدراً من الممانعة من قوى مؤسّساتية وأخرى اجتماعية، تأخذ أحياناً لبوساً دينياً وآخر إثنياً وثالثاً قبلياً، خاصة أن هذا التغيير يهدّد الأسس المؤسّساتية والمعيارية التي تتشكل في ضوئها الحصص.
يخلق هذا الصراع حالة من الفوضى ويبعث في بعضهم رغبة عارمة في التعبير عن هوياتهم الصغيرة، وهي في جلّها تمثّلات عن الصراعات المعلنة أو المستترة على القوة وحصصها في المجتمع.
يشرّح الكتاب حالة العمالة الوافدة إلى الخليج، التي باتت تمثل نسباً كبيرة من إجمالي السكان تتجاوز النصف في بعض الدول، محتفظة بعاداتها ضمن «غيتوهات» مجتمعية صغيرة أو كبيرة، كما يعرض إشكالات تتعلق بوضع المرأة الخليجية على الصعيدين الاجتماعي والسياسي، موضحاً جملة من الظواهر المستجدة في العلاقات الاجتماعية في الخليج مع الأخذ بالاعتبار التقسيمات الحضرية والإثنية.
