"صار عندما يجالسه يتقصد أن يلفت انتباهه إلى الظروف المعيشية الصعبة التي يعيشها الناس. يعيد عليّ على ابنه ما حصل اليوم وأمس في فلسطين أو في العراق. يدلي برأي في حدث إسرائيلي - عربي. يعتمد صيغة السؤال، وابنه لا يرد. يذكره تبعثر هذا أو ذاك من تجار المنطقة وملاّكها. يستند إلى حكايات يقصّها عليه صديق تاجر من السوق تصل إليه أخبار صور كلها. يقول الابن، لعل سماعه تلك القصص ينبهه إلى أن الأزمة كبيرة في البلد، وأنه ليس وحده في الضيق. وعندما ينتهي من تلك القصص، لا يشعر بأنه وفق في مسعاه. يبقى كما كان، تلفه المأساة. قال له مرة: "أحمد الله أن الأمور توقفت عند هذا الحد. أنت اغتلت اقتصادياً. بدا عليه الرضى من ذاك الاعتبار. وقال له مرة أخرى: "ليس كل الناس تنتقل ثروتهم بهذا الشكل. أنت عملتها ناساً. أليست ثروة أن الشاب يتعلم ويحمل شهادة وتمشي حياته ولا يحتاج إلى رأس مال ينطلق به. من يتعلم يصرف رأس مال التأسيس وهو يتعلم، وليس بعد تخرجه؟" قال علي: "تخليت عن مسؤوليات رئيسية في الحزب من أجل أسرتي وحفاظاً عليها". من بيوت من بيوتات صور تنطلق الأحداث التي تستدعيها شخصية الرفيق علي. إنسان كانت له تطلعاته التي تلاشت عند منعطف مستقبل أولاده.
يصور الروائي الواقع الحياتي بكل أبعاده السياسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية من خلال حواريات شخصياته ويتغلغل إلى أعماقهم من خلال منولوجاتهم الداخلية التي تفضح عن عمق المعاناة الإنسانية عندما تغدو المتطلبات الحياتية والواقع المعاش وسائل دمار للإنسان بكل معطياته وبكل إمكانياته.
