بسبب الاعتداءات الإسرائيلية تهجر عائلة أم نجم "وداد" قريتها التي تقع على الحدود، ثم تنتقل العائلة إلى بيروت، ثم تنتقل مرة أخرى من بيروت وإليها بسبب الحرب الأهلية.
في أجواء الحياة الحزبية، بكل أشكالها، التي كانت تسود تلك المرحلة، تدور أحداث هذه الرواية التي تسرد سيرة أم نجم "وداد" وعائلتها، فتقدم لنا صورة عن ظروف الحياة في مرحلة الحرب الأهلية، وانقسام بيروت بين شرقية وغربية.
سيرة "الرفيقة وداد" هي سيرة امرأة متزوجة من مسؤول تنظيمي، يحمل أفكار تقدمية لكنه لا يمارسها في حياته، فقررت أخذ مصيرها بيدها.
"عندما رأت أم نجم "وداد" زوجها يبالغ في حلاقة ذقنه، ويتحاشى تلاقي نظراتهما، تقدمت منه منقادة بحسها الأنثوي، وبخبرة النساء الفطرية بنصب الكمائن الحوارية، سألته: هل ننتظرك على العشاء الليلة؟
أربكها سؤالها، وحاول إخفاء ارتباكه بأن أطال تنشيف وجهه، كان متيقناً أن عينيها تراقبان كل حركة يقوم بها، بغبائه الذكوري المتعالي أجاب: لا عندي مهمة تنظيمية هذا اليوم، فلا تنتظروني على العشاء".
