Book Description
يروي بافيزه في "الرفيق" حياة بابلو، الذي سُمي بهذا الاسم لأنه عازف غيتار في تورينو، مسقط رأسه، لكنه كان يعاني من المشاكل الوجودية في تلك الفترة، بين الحرب الأهلية الإسبانية والحرب العالمية الثانية، وحيث كان النظام الفاشي يواصل فقد سطوته على الشعب، وحتى فقد الخضوع الشعبي له والذي كان صمامه الآمن، يحاول بابلو أن يملأ الفراغ والنقص الآيدلوجي اللذين سببا له الضياع والقلق.
يغادر مدينته تورينو ويلجأ إلى روما، فيجد لنفسه هناك، وسط الفوضى العارمة، سبيلًا للعيش، ليتمكن بعدها من العودة إلى مدينته، وقد عقد العزم على انجاز شيء ما.
من أجواء الرواية:
عدتُ إلى البيت مساءً، وما يزال عبق البحر عالقاً بشَفَتَيّ. الآن فقط أعرف لماذا يملأ الناسُ في روما الشوارعَ، وتعلو البسمةُ وجوهَهم، وليس ذلك ديدن الأغنياء فحسب، بل هو ما يفعله الجميع. كان يكفيهم الصعود إلى سطوح منازلهم، ليشاهدوا البحر على مرمى خطوات منهم. حتّى الفقراء والمعدمون كانوا يتحسّسون البحر عبر نوافذهم وشُرفات منازلهم. عمّال بناء، فتيات، أطفال، شغّيلة، وناس بُسطاء مُتعبين، كانوا يخرجون إلى الشوارع، ويتخاطبون بأصوات عالية، ويضحكون. في إحدى الصباحات، مررتُ بالقرب من بعض الفاشيِّيْن، حتّى هم كانوا باسمين، كانوا عائدين من تظاهرة سياسية وهم يُنشدون، ويضحكون.
