خطاب أدب الرحلات في القرن الرابع الهجري تميز بطرائقه الوصفية الخاصّة، فوصف الأمكنة، وخلق منها مشابهات وجدانيّة تجعله لا يرى المكان الجغرافي، وإنّما يحرره من أيّ سلطة، ليبدو مزدوجاً بين الواقع والتخيّل، فتصبح له صورة جديدة، لا تُرى إلا في منظوره الخاص.
عُرف هذا الخطابُ باختياراته على المستويين، المعجميِّ واللُّغويِّ، فنقل موصوفه واستحضـره، كي يسدَّ به شقوقَ متاعب الرحلة، بصبغة خاصَّة يستشعرها متلقِّيه ويردُّها إليه، إذ تمثِّل آليَّاته في خطابه الوصفي، فنظر إلى العالم الخارجي وفق رؤيته الخاصَّة أولاً، ثم محدّدات الواقع ثانياً.
وظَّفَ خطابُ أدب الرحلات اختياراته اللغوية، لإيصال ما يريد من رضا وقبول للمكان، أو استياء ورفض له، فجاءت مكرَّرة في الرحلة الواحدة، وفي الرحلات المدروسة كلِّها.. برز التكرار سواء أكان في اللفظ أم في المعنى، واتَّخذ إطاراً عامَّاً يحدِّد هذا الخطاب، ويصبغه بصبغةٍ لغويَّة تجعله ميدانَ دراسةٍ لم تُطرق من قبل، بشكلٍ مخصوصٍ، إذ انصبَّ جُلُّ اهتمام الدراسات السابقة على فائدة الرحلات من النواحي التاريخيَّة، والجغرافيَّة، والدينيَّة، والسياسيَّة، والإنسانيَّة، ولم تدرس دراسات لغويَّة خاصَّة، ومنها على سبيل المثال لا الحصر: «تاريخ الأدب الجغرافي العربي» لكراتشكوفسكي (1957)، و«أدب الرحلة عند العرب في المشـرق» لعلي محسن عيسى مال الله (1978)، و«الرحلة والرحَّالة المسلمون» لأحمد رمضان أحمد (1980)، و«الرحلة عين الجغرافية المبصرة» لصلاح الدين الشامي (1982).
