استيقظت بدرية من نومها العميق منتفضة , وقد شعرت أن يداً تهزها من كتفها , ورأت وجه مخدومها جيفرى بالقرب من وجهها فى فراشها المتواضع . كانت لاتزال ذاهلة من أثر النوم , فلم تلحظ أنه قد تمدد بجسمه على السرير إلى جوارها فسألته بشىء من القلق :
- هل أندرو بخير ؟
كانت درجة حرارة الصبى قد ارتفعت قبل موعد نومه , بقليل , وأعطته والدته حبة من الأسبرين قبل أن يأوى إلى فراشه , لذلك فقد تصورت بدرية , عندما أيقظها جيفرى , أن الصبى يعانى شيئاً , وأن أبويه يريدان منها أن تعاونهما بعمل ما . وشعرت بدرية بيده التي كان يهز بها كتفها منذ لحظات , وقد انزلقت إلى أسفل , وتسللت من تحت ردائها إلى فخذها , وحاولت بدرية أن تصرخ , لكن صرختها لم تكتمل . فقد أسرعت يد جيفرى إلى فمها فسدته . وسمعته يقول بصوت منخفض , حاول أن يكون مهدئاً ومقنعاً فى أن واحد :
- لا تخشى شيئاً ولا تصرخى , فقد توقظين مارلين ..
وإذا استيقظت ورأت هذا المنظر , فلن تمكثى فى المنزل لحظة واحدة .
