عندما قرأت , وأنا مازلت طالبا فى الجامعة , عبارة لينين " السجن مدرسة الثوار " , كان أول ما تبادر إلى ذهنى هو أن قائد أول ثورة شيوعية استطاعت الاستيلاء على السلطة فى العالم , يقصد بتلك العبارة أن السجن اختبار لصلابة الثائر , وصقل لمقدرته على التحمل والمقاومة , ولا شىء أكثر من ذلك . لكننى أدركت كم كان فهمى سطحيا بعد تجربة السجن التى مررت لها مع عدد كبير من الشيوعيين والتقدميين واليساريين , من أول يناير 1959 وحتى مايو 1964 .
وسأحاول أن أوضح للقارئ كيف أن عبارة لينين أبعد أثرا بكثير مما تصورته قبل هذه التجربة , التى كتب عنها الكثيرون قبلى ... وأرجو ألا يسىء القارئ فهم ما قصدته من هذا الذى سأقصه عليه , فيظن أن السجن مكان جميل , يقضي فيه المسجون أو المعتقل أوقاتا سعيدة هانئة .
فالسجن في جميع الأحوال , مكان يفتقد فيه الإنسان حريته وشعوره بالأمان , حتى فى أفضل حالاته , ناهيك عن فترات سوء المعاملة والتعذيب . وإننى سأكتب هنا عن مجهود خارق كان المسجونون يبذلونه ليقاوموا بالتحديد , الظروف غير الإنسانية التى كانوا يوجدون فيها . ومن هنا يبدو الجانب المشرق من التجربة . وأرجو ألا يشعر القارئ الذى لم يدخل سجنا , أنه يفتقد تجربة جميلة , ويتمنى أن يكون قد خبرها , فالسجن تجربة لا يتمنى من عاشها أن يحياها مرة أخرى , ولا يتمناها حتى لأعدى أعدائه .
