هو الصوفيُّ الأكثر إثارةً للجدل في التاريخ الإسلامي، والأعمق أثرًا، فكان وسيظلُّ «الحلاج» نموذجًا لافتًا في تاريخ الإنسانية، يقف أمامه الكثيرون من الباحثين عن معنى الحب الإلهي، والمتأملين في فلسفته التي تُعدُّ صفحةً مشرقةً من صفحات التراث الإنسانيِّ، وتدين بالفضل لفيلسوفٍ وشاعرٍ عربيٍّ مسلمٍ، استطاع باتساع أفقه أن يقفز على أسوار المذهبية والطائفية، ويجعل من مأساته الخاصة موردًا عذبًا تنهل منه العقول والقلوب في كلِّ مكانٍ وزمانٍ، ومصدرَ إلهامٍ لكلِّ أحرار العالم الذين يحلِّقون بأرواحهم وأذهانهم في سماءات الحرية. ويُعدُّ الحلاج أحدَ أهمِّ أقطاب التصوُّف الإسلاميِّ الذين اصطدموا بالسلطة الحاكمة الغاشمة، ودفعوا حياتهم ثمنًا لصدقهم.
