تقف رواية "الديك الهارب" أو كما عُرفت لاحقاً بإسم "الرجل الذي مات" كمفترق طرق أخير في حياة ديفيد هربرتلورنس (1930-1885) المثيرة للجدل والإعجاب، كما هي كامل أعماله فيقدّم فيها رؤية جديدة لرحلة الإنسان، وصراع الروح والجسد في رمزيّة خلابة، كتب الجزء الأول منها في العام 1927، بعد زيارة قام بها إلى المقابر الإثروسكانيَّة شجعت على التفكير في الموت وأساطير القيامة، وكتب الجزء الثاني في أثناء إقامة في غشتاد بسويسرا في العام 1928 لما كان يعاني إعتلالاً شديداً في صحته، وشبح الموت يحلَّق فوق رأسه.
لخّص لورنس حكاية روايته في رسالة إلى صديقه بروستر، قال فيها: "كتبتُ قصَّة القيامة؛ لما قام يسوع من قبره وهو يشعر بغثيان شديد من كل شيء، وأنه لم يعد يطبق عموم الناس بعد أن تحرَّر من وهمه، وكيف اتهمني رحلة شفائه من المرض بدأ يدرك كم هو مذهل عالم الظواهر، وكيف أنه أشد روعة من الخلاص أو من الفردوس، ولحسن حظَّه، لم يعد في حاجة إلى رسالته".
