انطلق القارب متجهاً نحو الضفة الأخرى والتزم الجميع الصمت، وهم لا يدرون أي مصير ينتظرهم. وكان سعيد يودع اليابسة بنظرة من ضاع منه كل شيء، ويحاول أن يسترجع الماضي الهارب في لحظات منفلتة، لكن أنى له أن يستجمع شتاتاً أصبح واقعاً، وأنى له أن يرجع زمناً اغتالته الظروف القاهرة..! ينظر ذات اليمين وذات الشمال، ولا يرى إلا زرقة البحر تداعبها الأمواج الثائرة والباحثة عن اليابسة.. يتفرس محطة المغارة الرابعة، فتلوح له أضواء طنجة الباهتة تودع في استحياء أبناءها الذين ضاقت بهم الأرض بما رحبت. ويحاول في آخر المطاف أن يبحث له عن مصدر يرجع من خلاله قوته وشجاعته الريفية، فينتابه شعور غريب وهو يسمع دقات قلب أخيه عياد تكاد تغادر جسمه النحيف من شدة الخفقان. أما علال فكانت أسنانه تصطك من شدة البرد القارس، وهو يحاول في استحياء، وربما خوف وهلع إخفاء شعوره.. علال الذي كان بالأمس زير النساء، فكيف له الآن أن يظهر بمظهر الخائف أمام فتيات استسلمن في خنوع تام للقدر المحتوم..! وتبادل الأخوة النظرات تلو النظرات، وكأنهم يريدون الإفصاح عن شيء أصبح أمراً مفعولاً.. أشياء ما كان لها أن تحدث لو تفادوا الأماني الكاذبة.
