كان د. هـ لورنس صغيراً جداً ومغموراً جداً عندما باشر بكتابة المسوّدة الاولى لهذا الكتاب في خريف عام 1906، كان حينئذٍ في جامعة نوتنغهام يقضي دورة إعدادية مدتها عامان لكي ينال شهادته كمُدرّس للمرحلة الإبتدائية.
كان قد التحق بالجامعة بجهوده الخاصة، ذلك أنَّ والده، عامل المنجم ذو الأطفال الخمسة، لم يكن في وسعه أنْ يتحمّل تكاليف إرساله إلى هناك من دون مساعدة، وكان لورنس تلميذاً متفوقاً بصورة إستثنائية في المدرسة وعندما تقدّم لنيل منحة كينغ الدراسية أذهل رفاقه بكونه الأولى في الدفعة الأولى، ولولا تدهور صحته لكان له مستقبل أكاديمي مرموق.
نشأت رواية "الطاووس الأبيض"، التي كُتِبَتْ وأُعيدت كتابتها ثلاث مرات أو أرع على مدى ثلاث سنوات خلال ساعات الفراغ وفي العُطل، من تجارب حياته في ميدلاند ومنذ بداية مسيرته الأدبية أبدى أصالة وعدم إكتراث بالأدب السائد، الذي كان في ذلك الوقت منكباً على "الشكل" في الرواية رافقه فراغ في المحتوى.
بالنسبة إلى لورنس لم يكن تأليف رواية عرضاً فنياً لحكاية مُختلّفة ولا مجرد قطعة من التسلية المُثيرة - بل كانت "مغامرة ذهنية"؛ تهدف في المقام الأول إلى وضع القارئ في تلامسٍ مع الحياة، لقد مقت أنواع الكتابة "الشكلانيّة" كلها، وأخطاؤه التي ارتكبها مرجعها في الغالب إلى تصميمه الشديد على أنْ يكون صادقاً مع الحياة كما عرفها، وللسبب نفسه تنتهي رواياته كالمعتاد بهدوء، وبدون حسم تقريباً - لأنَّ النهاية الماهرة أو المُثيرة ينبغي دائماً تقريباً أنْ تُزيّف الحياة.
