تُعَدُّ تربيةُ الأولادِ مِن أَهمِّ المُنجَزاتِ التي يستطيعُ الإنسانُ أنْ يَفتخِرَ بِها، ولا سِيَّما الأمَّهات، اللاتي يَغرِسْنَ في أبنائِهنَّ القِيَمَ والأخلاق؛ ذلك لأنَّ إخراجَ جِيلٍ صالحٍ يُحافِظُ على الفضيلةِ يُمثِّلُ هَدفًا عظيمًا. وهذا هو ما سَعَتْ إليهِ كلٌّ مِن «هيلين» و«مرغريت» في تربيةِ ولدَيهِمَا «فرجيني» و«بول». وعندما شبَّ الطِّفلانِ أَحبَّ كلٌّ مِنهُما الآخَر، لكنَّ الحياةَ لا تُعطِي كلَّ شيء؛ فقد ماتتْ «فرجيني» لأنَّها فضَّلَتْ أن يَبتَلِعَها البحرُ دونَ أَنْ تُفرِّطَ في أخلاقِها، وتَبِعَها حَبيبُها «بول» حُزنًا عليها، ودُفِنَا معًا، ثُم بَعدَ شهرٍ ماتتْ وَالِدتُها «هيلين»، وبعدَ ثلاثةِ أشهُرٍ تُوفِّيَتْ وَالِدتُه «مرغريت». هكذا رَحلَتِ العائلتانِ كما رَحلَتِ الفَضيلَةُ أيضًا. لقد أَرادَ «المنفلوطي» أَنْ يُذكِّرَنا بقيمةِ الفَضيلَةِ التي اندَثَرتْ بين زَخمِ الأيام، والتي نَحتاجُ إليها كثيرًا لِكَي نَنهَضَ بأخلاقِنا وحضارتِنا مرةً أخرى.
