الفضيلة عند أفلوطين منذ أن وُجد الإنسان على هذه المعمورة وهو يُحاول أن يكشف خباياها، وخبايا ذاته كذلك لأن فضول المعرفة يدفعه، وحب اكتشاف الحقيقة يُلح عليه، فكان يجتهد ويُثابر ويقتحم كل ما يراه مجهولاً، والفضيلة إحدى الموضوعات التي طالما كانت تحظى بالأولوية عنده، فيتناولها على أساس أنها موضوع مصيري لأنها تُسهل الحياة عنده فلا تستقيم دونها، فهي من تُثبت وجود الإنسان فيه وتُثبت ترفّعه على الملموس والحيواني وتُنظم حياته وعلاقته بمن حوله وعلاقته بنفسه كذلك، ثم علاقته بمصدر الخلق الذي يُؤمن به، فكانت كل الحضارات الإنسانية عبر التاريخ لا تمر مرور الكرام عليها بل تُثير الجدل والخلاف والنزاع حولها فتضاربت حولها الآراء، وحدث الانشقاق حول مضمونها وطُرق تناولها. وقد كان أفلوطين من بين من قاموا بذلك وهذا ليس غريبًا على من اتخذ المجال الروحاني ساحته ومن أخد الوجدان الإنساني إلى الأعلى، ورفض الجماد فيه، وأنزله إلى الأسفل، فقد أسس فلسفة الإنسان الإنساني الذي يتغلغل في نفسه، ويعرفها فيتنزه على ما يراه، لهذا كانت الفضيلة أسمى ما يهدف إليه ويحقق به هذه الغاية القصوى، ومن هنا يظهر لنا مدى أهمية الفضيلة عنده.
