كان من نتائج تجارب برناردين دي سان بيير الطويلة أن اعتقد أن سعادة الإنسان قائمة على سلوك سبيل الحياة حسبما تتطلبه الطبيعة والفضيلة، وأن الفضيلة العامة مهما بلغ من اتساعها فإن مكانها الأول في نفس كل فرد، ولذلك عدل عن فكرة الجمهورية التي حاول إنشاءها واقتصر على وصف حياة بعض الأسر المنزوية في ظلال الوحدة التي تتذوق طعم النعيم في حجر الطبيعة، وعند بساط الفضيلة وهكذا ظهر سفره الخالد (بول وفرجيني) فهز أوتار المشاعر وملك أزمة القلوب، وكان فجراً لليل الأدب وتاجاً على رؤوس الأقلام وشعلة صافية باردة فاض بها فؤاده الذي غمرته الفضيلة والصبر والرحمة، وكان لظهوره تأثير عظيم في جميع أنحاء فرنسا، فأبكى كل عين وصعّد كل زفرة. ولم تبق أسرة ولد لها ابن إلا سمته "بول" أو ابنة إلا سمتها "فرجيني".
وكان أكبر أثر في نفوس الناس من هذه الرواية أن حوادثها صحيحة ليس فيها من الخيال إلا النسق والترتيب فقد قال مؤلفها في مقدمتها "إني لم أتخيّل قصة روائية أصور فيها حياة سعيدة تمتعت بها أسرة أوروبية في وسط ذلك القفر، بل يمكنني أن أقول أن أشخاص هذه الرواية قد عاشوا حقيقة في تلك الأصقاع وتمتعوا بالسعادة التي وصفتها وأن تاريخهم في مجمله صحيح شهد به كثير من سكان تلك الجزيرة، ولم أضف عليه إلا بعض جزئيات وليست بذات بال".
