يوسف البستاني: أديبٌ وبائعُ كُتبٍ لبناني.
وُلد «البستاني» في لبنان في عامِ ١٨٩٢م، وبعد ذلك ارتحل إلى مصر، حيث عَمِل بائعًا متجولًا للكُتبِ في القاهرةِ وأنشأ مكتبتَه المعروفةَ بمنطقة «الفجالة»، ومن خلالِها نَشر مؤلَّفاتِ كبارِ الأدباءِ الشوام، مثل: «جبران خليل جبران» و«أمين الريحاني» و«أحمد فارس الشدياق» وغيرِهم، كذلك اشتَغلَ بتجارةِ المخطوطاتِ القديمةِ والنادرة؛ فكان مَعروفًا لدى مكتباتِ أوروبا وأمريكا، وعَمِل في نهايةِ حياتِه على تكوينِ نقابةٍ تَضمُّ المُشتغِلين بتجارةِ الكُتب.
للبستاني عدةُ مُؤلَّفاتٍ أدبيةٍ وتاريخيةٍ قَيِّمة، نَذكرُ منها: «تاريخ حرب البلقان الأولى»، و«النسر الأعظم»، و«أمثال الشرق والغرب».
تُوفِّي البستاني في عامِ ١٩٢٥م.

عديد من المؤلَّفات التاريخية تناولت – وما زالت تتناول – عهد نابوليون بونابارت الأول؛ إمبراطور فرنسا، رجل الدولة الحاذق، والمحارب الداهية الذي تُدرَّس حملاته العسكرية في المدارس الحربية حول العالم، وفي هذا الكتاب يسلِّط «يوسف البستاني» الضوء على جوانب مثيرة من حياة ذلك النسر ذي الجناحين الضافيين، واللذين يخبِّئان في طياتهما شخصيةً فيها من الرِّقة والحزم ما فيها. يصحبنا المؤلِّف في رحلة تبدأ بمولد نابوليون في بيتٍ عانى أوضاعًا مادِّيَّة سيِّئة، ثمَّ نرى كيف أخذ منحنى حياته بالتغير إثر التحاقه بمدرسة باريس الحربية، فسرعان ما تحوَّل الفتى الفقير إلى جنرال مهيب، وقع في غرام جوزفين زوجته الأولى، ولم يكن ثقل الأعباء الملقاة على عاتقه يمنعه من أن يكون زوجًا وأبًا مُحبًّا، وبين الحبِّ والحرب كانت انتصارات النسر وانكساراته صفحة من صفحات التاريخ جديرة بالقراءة والتأمل.
