تمتلك "إليسيا ويد" شركة سياحية مع صديقتها وقد حققت نجاحاً باهراً، وكانت "إليسيا" أرملة لطيار حربي قتل في إحدى عمليات التدريب تصاب الشابة بعقدة الكراهية والخوف من الطائرات والطيارين والزي الرسمي لسلاح الجو.
يسكن بجوارها-مصادفة-شاب من أبطال الطيران وصفوة الطيارين الذين يسمون "طيارو التجارب" وتلتقي به في ظروف غريبة ويقع كل منهما في حب الآخر بسرعة شديدة وهي لا تعرف أنه طيار تجارب ويحاول أن يخفي هذه الحقيقة عندما يعلم بمأساة مقتل زوجها؛ حتى يمهد تدريجياً لأن تحبه كإنسان ويزيل منها الخوف من الطيارين ولكنها تكتشف الحقيقة بسرعة-دون إرادته-وهنا يدور صراع شديد بين الطيار-الذي أصبحت هي جزءاً من حياته لا يستطيع الاستغناء عنه-وبين رعبها من الطيران الذي يشكل الجزء الثاني المهم من حياته.
ارتأت المرأة أنهما لن يضطرا على الأقل إلى توديع بعضهما على الرصيف. لا بد أن الطبيب سيبقى عدة أيام بـ"لندن". بالتأكيد سيشغله مؤتمره طوال بقائه هناك. إنه سينزل في الفندق الكبير الذي حجز به غرفة، بينما ستذهب هي للإقامة عند صديقتها. سيجدان مع ذلك بعض اللحظات التي يتقاسمانها أمام الناس بشكل أو بآخر. ماذا يخبئ لهما القدر؟ إنها لا تعرف. لكنها في المقابل تعرف السعادة التي تحسّ بها لدى وجودها إلى جوار "مايك".
