يوسف البستاني: أديبٌ وبائعُ كُتبٍ لبناني.
وُلد «البستاني» في لبنان في عامِ ١٨٩٢م، وبعد ذلك ارتحل إلى مصر، حيث عَمِل بائعًا متجولًا للكُتبِ في القاهرةِ وأنشأ مكتبتَه المعروفةَ بمنطقة «الفجالة»، ومن خلالِها نَشر مؤلَّفاتِ كبارِ الأدباءِ الشوام، مثل: «جبران خليل جبران» و«أمين الريحاني» و«أحمد فارس الشدياق» وغيرِهم، كذلك اشتَغلَ بتجارةِ المخطوطاتِ القديمةِ والنادرة؛ فكان مَعروفًا لدى مكتباتِ أوروبا وأمريكا، وعَمِل في نهايةِ حياتِه على تكوينِ نقابةٍ تَضمُّ المُشتغِلين بتجارةِ الكُتب.
للبستاني عدةُ مُؤلَّفاتٍ أدبيةٍ وتاريخيةٍ قَيِّمة، نَذكرُ منها: «تاريخ حرب البلقان الأولى»، و«النسر الأعظم»، و«أمثال الشرق والغرب».
تُوفِّي البستاني في عامِ ١٩٢٥م.

على الرغمِ من أنَّ لا شيءَ يُمكنُ أن يُواسيَ الثَّكالى فيمن قَضَوا أو أصيبوا في الحربِ في وقائعَ وحشيةٍ غايتُها أهدافٌ عبثيَّة، فإنَّ بعضَ المُفكرِين يرى في الحربِ ذُروةَ التجربةِ الإنسانيةِ بحُلوِها ومُرِّها، تُختبرُ فيها القِيمُ والمبادئُ على أرضِ الواقع. وقد كانت الحربُ العالميةُ الأولى من أشدِّ الحروبِ وحشيَّةً؛ إذ شهدَت أوَّلَ استخدامٍ للطائراتِ الحربيِّةِ والغازاتِ السامَّة، وقُتِل خلالَ معاركِها ملايينُ الأشخاصِ، سواءٌ من العسكريين أو المدنيين، وحفلَت سنواتُها الأربعُ بالعديدِ من القصصِ المأساوية الحزينةِ وأيضًا الطريفةِ والغريبة. وفي هذا الكتابِ جمعَ المُؤلِّفُ بعضًا من هذه القصصِ التي نُشرَت في الجرائدِ والمجلاتِ العربيةِ والأجنبيةِ الصادرةِ في فترةِ الحرب.
